We hear "honor" and think respect. But the Hebrew word is kavod — something that is weighted, heaped upon, heavy with significance.
That changes the whole commandment.
The fifth word is the hinge of the entire ten. The first four go up — how you relate to God. The last five go out — how you treat people. And right in the middle, bridging both directions, is this: honor your father and mother.
