Open Hands: Scarcity, Stealing, and the Generous God | Exodus 20:15

Open Hands: Scarcity, Stealing, and the Generous God | Exodus 20:15

The Lord Speaks - Sunday, September 13, 2026

Do not steal. Simple enough, right?

But the biblical definition of stealing goes further than most of us want to admit — taking without consent, yes, but also defrauding, deceiving, and withholding what is rightfully owed. And underneath all of it is the same mentality: there isn't enough, so I better take what I can get.

In this message, Eric walks through the eighth commandment and makes the case that this is really a generosity sermon. He traces the scarcity mentality from COVID toilet paper shelves to the Malachi storehouse, from the farmer's market scale to Abraham on the mountain — and lands on the only thing that actually transforms takers into givers: the gospel.

In this message:

  • What stealing actually means — legally and biblically
  • How taking from your neighbor diminishes them — and connects to contempt
  • The scarcity mentality vs. our generous God who has cattle on a thousand hills
  • Why God asked for tithes — and what Nehemiah 12 says about where it actually went
  • The rich young man and the open hands Jesus asks for

Key Scriptures:
Exodus 20:15 • Leviticus 19 • Malachi 3:6–12 • Genesis 22 • 2 Corinthians 8:9 • Matthew 19:16–22 • Philippians 2 • Proverbs 11:1
